Do you want to install Joomla on Windows PC? In this tutorial, I will show how to install Joomla in the XAMPP server. It means you can learn about installing Joomla locally on your computer. We’ll describe to you all the importance of installing Joomla on the localhost and also explain all the steps that will help you to easily install Joomla on your PC.

Joomla is one of the free and open-source content management systems. Joomla based on PHP and MySQL and also user-friendly. You can create almost all types of websites like from personal blogs to eCommerce sites on Joomla.

If you are a web developer you know that almost every developer-first developer their web on localhost for testing purposes and after all the development and testing migrate their web application on the live server. So if you want to create your blog or website on Joomla you should first develop on the localhost server. Because of this, you can easily test or add a new feature on your website without affecting your live site and you can then easily apply the same changes on your site without any problems.

How to install Joomla locally on PC

Installing Joomla on the local host is very easy. You need to follow some major steps. You can’t install Joomla directly on your computer. So for working with the Joomla framework on your computer, you have to establish a localhost server environment on your computer and then download and install the Joomla on the localhost.

There are three major steps to installing WordPress

  1. Create a localhost server environment on the system.
  2. Download Joomla from the official site.
  3. Install Joomla on the localhost server.

Step 1: Install the Localhost Server on Computer

For installing any Content Management system like WordPress, Joomla, etc. you need to create a localhost environment in PC.

In this tutorial, we are using the XAMPP server. XAMPP is a free open source application and also a collection of Apache web server, PHP and MySQL Bundled for Computers. You Can Download the XAMPP server from our Website or can also download it from the official website.

Step 2: Download Joomla

You can download the latest version of Joomla from its official website.

Step 3: Installing Joomla on Windows

For installing Joomla on windows you should complete the above both steps. Because without both steps you can’t install Joomla on your computer.

step 3.1 Creating Database.

For this step first, you need to start Apache and MySQL from the XAMPP control panel.

As you know every application or website needs a database to store data. So first, you need to create a database for your Joomla website. Open the browser and enter localhost/PHPMyAdmin on the address bar and press enter.

You will get the database dashboard. Click on “New” and provide any name you want in the database name field and click on the “Create” button.

Step 3.2 Paste Joomla in XAMPP htdocs Directory

Extract the Joomla downloaded zip file and Copy this folder.

Go to the XAMPP folder where you have installed in your system. And open the htdocs folder (found inside the XAMPP directory) and paste the Joomla folder in the htdocs directory.

You can rename the Joomla folder if you want with any name. But keep it remember the folder name will be the URL of your localhost Joomla website.

Step 3.3 Installing Joomla

Now open your browser and type localhost/Joomla (name of type Joomla folder in the htdocs directory) on the address bar and press enter. After this below image will be rendered on screen. And you need to fill some information for your Joomla website.

Step 3.4 Configuration

In the configuration screen, you need to select the language you can choose any language you want from the drop-down menu.

Then the configuration divide into two sections first is ‘Main Configuration‘ and the second is ‘Super User Account Details‘.

In the main configuration section, you need to provide your site name. You can set any name you want. Then need to provide a description of your site. And in last you need to select site status, ‘Yes‘ for offline and ‘No‘ for online.

Then in Super user Account Details, you need to provide email, username, and password, confirm password as admin information of your site.

And then press the ‘Next‘ button.

Step 3.5 Database

In the database configuration section, you need to configure the database to connect your Joomla site with a database.

First, you need to select the database type. Then you need to provide hostname like you are using local server so you need to enter ‘localhost’ as a hostname.

After that, you need to provide username and password (use ‘root‘ as username and leave the empty field of password).

Then you need to enter the database name (the database you have created in the previous step). And then you need to set table prefix, leave it by default. And in last you have to select between two options first is ‘ Backup’ to backup table from former Joomla installation and the second is ‘Remove; to delete the tables.

After this click on the ‘Next‘ button.

Step 3.6 Overview

In the Overview section, you can select the installing sample data or not by selecting the given options.

And then click on the install button.

When the installation completes, you need to click on the “Remove installation folder” button to complete the installation. After that, you will get two options first is “site” to see your created site and the second is “Administrator” to go to the admin area.

Configuration, now you have successfully installed Joomla on the Windows system with the XAMPP server.
