General Application Shortcuts

First, there is a list of general keyboard shortcuts of MS Excel for manipulating workbooks, perform interface related actions and more.

  • Ctrl + N : Create a new workbook
  • Ctrl + O : Open an available workbook
  • Alt + H : Go to the Home tab section in top menu
  • Ctrl + S : Save a working workbook
  • F12 : Show the Save as dialog box
  • Ctrl + Z : Undo an action
  • Ctrl + Y : Redo an action
  • F11 : Create a bar chart with the help of select data (on a separate sheet)

  • Shift + F11 : Insert a new worksheet

More General keys
  • F4: Repeat the last action you performed. e.g. if the last thing you typed in a cell is “Name”, clicking another cell and pressing F4 repeats that action in the new cell.
  • Alt + W : Move to View tab section in top menu
  • Alt + X : Go to Add-ins tab section in top menu
  • F1 : Open the help pane
  • Alt + Y : open the help tab section in top menu
  • Alt + F8 : Show macro pop-up to create, run, edit or delete
  • F7 : spell check
  • Alt + F11 : Open the Microsoft Visual Basic for Application editor
  • Alt + F1 : Create a bar chart with the help of select data (on a same sheet)

Excel Keyboard Shortcuts To Formatting Cells

  • Ctrl + B : Apply or remove bold to the content of a cell, selected cell range, selected data
  • Ctrl + I : Apply or remove italics to the contents of a cell, selected cell range, selected data
  • Ctrl + U : Apply or remove underline to the contents of cell, selected cell range, selected data
  • Alt + H + B : Open border Menu for apply on a specific side
  • Ctrl + 9 : Hide the selected rows
  • Ctrl + 0 : Hide the select columns
  • Ctrl + 5 : Apply or remove strikethrough
  • Alt + H + H : Open the color menu to fill the cell
  • Ctrl + 1 : Open the current cell pop up
  • Ctrl + shift + & : Apply the outline border on selected cells
  • Ctrl + shift + _ : Remove the outline border on selected cells
  • Ctrl + shift + $ : Apply Currency format on selected cells

Working in a Worksheet or Cell

  • Tab : Move to the next cell
  • Shift + Tab : Move to the previous cell
  • Home: Go to the first cell in the current row
  • Ctrl + Home : Move to the first cell of spreadsheet
  • Page Up or Down : Go to one screen up or down in a spreadsheet
  • Ctrl + Page Up or Down : Switch to the previous or next spreadsheet
  • Alt + Page Up or Down : Go to one screen right or left in a spreadsheet
  • Up or Down Arrow : Move to one cell to the up or down
  • Ctrl + Up or Down Arrow : Go to the top or bottom cell in the column
  • Ctrl + Left or Right Arrow : Go the first or last cell in the working row
  • Left or Right Arrow : Go to one cell to the left or right

Excel Keyboard Shortcuts To Selecting Cells

  • Ctrl + A : Select the complete spreadsheet
  • Ctrl + Space : Select the complete column
  • Shift + Space : Select the complete row
  • Shift + pageUp : Expand the selection one screen up
  • Ctrl + Shift + Home : Expand the selection from working cell to the beginning of the worksheet cell
  • Shift + pageDown : Expand the selection one screen down
  • Shift + Left/Right Arrow : Expand the selection of cell to the left or right

Excel Keyboard Shortcuts To Editing Cells

  • F2: Edit in selected cell
  • Delete : Erase the data of a cell, selected cell range
  • Ese : Cancel an entry in a cell
  • Ctrl + C : Copy the data of a cell, selected cell range
  • Ctrl + V : Paste the data of a cell, selected cell range
  • Ctrl + X : Cut the data of a cell, selected cell range
  • Shift + F2 : Insert or edit a cell comment
  • Ctrl + Alt + V : Open the paste special pop up box
